Volunteer With The Blue Heart Foundation
At The Blue Heart Foundation, volunteers are more than helpers — they are part of the village.
Our young men need consistent, caring adults who believe in their potential, model positive leadership, and help create spaces where they can grow emotionally, academically, socially, and culturally.
Blue Heart serves young men ages 12–18 through a long-term youth development model focused on leadership, emotional wellness, academic and career readiness, cultural awareness, discipline, and brotherhood. Through our three academies — Mindful Heart Academy, HEART Leadership Academy, and Blue Heart Step & Cultural Arts Academy — we help young men build the confidence, character, and life skills needed to thrive.
If you are passionate about supporting young men and want to be part of meaningful community impact, we invite you to explore the volunteer opportunities below.
Current Volunteer Opportunities
Youth Coach / Curriculum Facilitator Volunteers
Youth Coaches play one of the most important roles in Blue Heart.
This is not a casual drop-in volunteer position. Youth Coaches help lead, teach, and facilitate Blue Heart curriculum during workshops, mentorship circles, and program activities. They support our young men through guided discussions, leadership lessons, emotional wellness activities, group facilitation, and relationship-building.
Youth Coaches should be comfortable speaking in front of youth, leading discussions, presenting lesson content, and helping create a safe, structured, and respectful environment.
Because this role focuses on male youth mentorship and positive male presence, Youth Coach Volunteer positions are reserved for men.
In some cases, consistent and highly qualified Youth Coach Volunteers may be considered for future paid opportunities depending on program needs, funding, availability, and fit.
Ideal Youth Coach Volunteers may have experience in:
- Mentoring or coaching youth
- Teaching, training, or public speaking
- Leading group discussions
- Emotional wellness or social-emotional learning
- Leadership development
- Academic, college, or career readiness
- Community work, ministry, athletics, arts, trades, or entrepreneurship
Workshop & Career Speakers
We welcome professionals, entrepreneurs, educators, tradesmen, artists, community leaders, and subject-matter experts who can expose our young men to new ideas, career paths, life skills, and real-world wisdom.
Workshop speakers may support topics such as:
- Career exploration
- Financial literacy
- Entrepreneurship
- College readiness
- Skilled trades
- Leadership
- Mental and emotional wellness
- Conflict resolution
- Communication
- Cultural identity and history
- Civic engagement
- Health and wellness
This is a great opportunity for individuals who want to give back but may not be available for ongoing volunteer service.
Academic, College & Career Support Volunteers
Blue Heart supports students as they prepare for life after high school. Volunteers with experience in education, college access, career development, writing, tutoring, or professional development can help our young men build confidence and readiness for their next steps.
Support may include:
- Tutoring
- College application support
- Essay review
- Scholarship support
- FAFSA or financial aid guidance
- Resume building
- Mock interviews
- Career exploration
- Job readiness
- Professional etiquette
- Knowledge of Historically Black College University (HBCU)
Event Support Volunteers
Blue Heart hosts several important events throughout the year, including our annual Signing Day and Christmas Breakfast & Community Awards.
Event volunteers help us create a welcoming, organized, and professional experience for our students, families, partners, and community supporters.
Event support may include:
- Setup and breakdown
- Guest check-in
- Hospitality
- Food service support
- Decorations
- Vendor or table support
- Parent and guest assistance
- Program-day logistics
- Booth and outreach support
This is a great fit for parents, community members, and supporters who want to help during special events without committing to regular programming.
Cultural Education & African Studies Volunteers
Blue Heart believes cultural awareness and identity development are important parts of leadership.
We welcome volunteers, educators, historians, artists, and cultural practitioners who can help our young men better understand history, identity, heritage, and the power of knowing who they are.
This may include workshops, presentations, discussions, cultural activities, or special programming connected to African and African American history, leadership, arts, and community legacy.
Behind-the-Scenes Support
Not every volunteer role requires working directly with students. Blue Heart also welcomes support from people who can help strengthen our operations, communication, outreach, and community engagement.
Behind-the-scenes support may include:
- Administrative support
- Parent communication support
- Social media/Graphic Design support
- Newsletter support
- Data entry
- Donor outreach
- Event planning
- Community outreach
- Online parent community support
The Blue Heart Academy Model
A Three-Pillar System for Developing Leaders
At The Blue Heart Foundation, we believe transformation doesn’t happen through one workshop, one mentor, or one event. It happens through structure. The Blue Heart Academy Model is our comprehensive, three-pillar youth development system designed to support young men academically, emotionally, culturally, and socially from middle school through high school graduation.
HEART Leadership Academy
Academic Excellence & Career Preparation
The HEART Leadership Academy prepares young men for college, career, and long-term economic mobility through structured mentorship and leadership development. Students gain support in college applications, financial literacy, career exploration, and professional skill-building — ensuring they graduate with a clear and confident post-secondary plan.
Blue Heart Step & Cultural Arts Academy
Honoring Tradition. Performing with Purpose.
The Step & Cultural Arts Academy preserves the rich tradition of Black American stepping while developing leadership, discipline, and cultural pride. Through structured rehearsals and public performances, students build confidence, teamwork, and accountability — carrying those lessons into school, community, and life.
Emotionally Strong Leaders Build Safer Communities.
The Mindful Heart Academy develops emotional intelligence, resilience, and self-mastery through structured mentoring and wellness programming. Students build confidence, self-regulation, and healthy communication skills — strengthening the foundation needed for academic success and leadership in life.
What We Look For in Volunteers
Blue Heart is intentional about who we invite into our village. Because we serve youth, we look for volunteers who are reliable, respectful, consistent, and aligned with our mission.
We value volunteers who bring:
- A heart for young people
- Respect for the communities we serve
- Strong communication skills
- Reliability and follow-through
- A positive attitude
- Patience and emotional maturity
- Cultural awareness
- Professionalism
- A willingness to learn
- A commitment to creating a safe and supportive environment
For Youth Coach roles, we also look for strong presentation, facilitation, and leadership skills.
Volunteer Commitment
Most Blue Heart programming takes place on Saturdays, with occasional additional activities, outings, rehearsals, and special events scheduled throughout the year.
Volunteer hours vary depending on the role. Some volunteers may support one-time events, while others may serve on a more consistent monthly basis.
Youth Coach Volunteers require the highest level of commitment because they help build trust, consistency, and connection with our young men.
Volunteer Process
To help us maintain a safe, structured, and supportive environment, all prospective volunteers must complete our Volunteer Interest Application.
Depending on the volunteer role, the process may include:
- Completing the Volunteer Interest Application
- A follow-up conversation with a Blue Heart team member
- Volunteer orientation
- Background screening, if required
- Placement based on interest, availability, experience, and program needs
Completing the application does not guarantee placement. Our goal is to make sure every volunteer is placed in a role that is safe, meaningful, and aligned with Blue Heart’s mission.
